A 40-year old woman was killed when a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus went out of control, reportedly due to brake failure, and ran over her, near Moolakadai Junction on Thursday morning. A motorist was injured in the accident. According to the police, brake failure had caused the accident.

The victim, Manjula, 40, lived in a small tile-roofed house near the junction. On Thursday around 7 a.m., Manjula, who earned a living by selling flowers, had stepped out of her house to purchase milk when the accident happened.

“She was crossing the road and going towards Kamarajar Salai, when a bus, plying on the route 170 C, ran over her. As the brakes were not functioning properly, the bus took a diagonal course, entered Kamarajar Salai and hit a motorbike and stopped. The motorist escaped with minor injuries,” said a police officer.

A huge crowd that gathered in no time demanded action against the driver.

“The bus was coming from the Madhavaram depot and was heading towards Manali to start the day’s service. It was empty. There were not many people on the road; otherwise, the accident would have been more tragic,” said a police officer.

After the accident, some MTC employees were called to take the bus from the spot.

“After one of the drivers started the bus and got it moving slowly, he had difficulty stopping it. Some members of the public and the police applied force and placed stones under the wheels and brought the vehicle to a halt,” said S. Mathivannan, a traffic police sub-inspector.

The Madhavaram traffic police registered a case and arrested bus driver Sekar (49). Further investigation is on.

Family shattered

At Manjula’s house, her relatives gathered to mourn her death. Now the burden of running the family has fallen completely on the shoulders of Selvarani, 16, her second child. Manjula’s eldest son is Chellamuthu and youngest, Thendral. Their father passed away many years ago.

“I scored more than 900 marks in the Plus Two examinations. But since my family did not have money for me to pursue higher studies, I am now working in a small shop near my house. My brothers do not earn much. Hence, I have to take care of the family now,” she said.
